Obituary for Peter Huziek

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our Father, Gido, Great Gido, Peter Huziek on the evening of January 5, 2020 at the Saskatoon Convalescent Home. Peter’s health had been steadily declining for the last number of years and the challenges were starting to affect his quality of life. Despite being a kidney dialysis patient for 13 years, which is quite an accomplishment in itself, it brought many challenges to his everyday living but he took this all with a grain of salt and carried on. In 13 years he never missed a dialysis appointment and he looked forward to dialysis days when he could visit, tell stories and joke with the staff at the St. Paul’s Dialysis Unit. Peter was the third child of six born to Wasyl and Mary (Markowski) Huziek. He was born on the farm where he continued to live until he married. Peter attended Sniatyn School up to grade 9. In 1947, their father Wasyl passed away leaving a heavier burden on the children to help their mother to manage the farm. In 1951, Peter met the love of his life, Adeline Sarchuk and they married on August 2, 1953 and started their own life’s journey.
After moving to Wakaw from the farm in the fall of 1964, Peter started his career in road construction which took him to different municipalities over a span of 35 years. Peter also had a passion for municipal politics and served as Mayor of Wakaw for 8 years and Alderman for 13 years. He also dedicated many years to the Wakaw Lions Club and received his Lifetime Membership Award in 1997. Peter and Adeline celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2003 just prior to Adeline’s passing in January 2004. Losing the love of his life was very hard on Peter and life was just never the same again although he continued to tell stories and jokes right up until the end. Peter leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Lesia Edwards (Ryan Smith) & their children, Colin (Marla) Schewaga & their children Mia & Andrew; Cory (Stacey) Schewaga & their children Alix & Avery; Dylan & Shane Smith; Jim (Bev) Huziek & their daughters Katherine (Karsten McCrea) & their children Kace, Kate & Kortlan; Heidi (Branden Engele); Ivan (Radka) Huziek & their son Keenan; Brothers-in-law Joe Pochipinski, Eugene Sarchuk, Paul Sarchuk & Leo (Peggy) Sarchuk; Sisters-in-law Olga Huziek, Mary (Barry) Langstroth & Iris (Ben Spurlock); numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Wasyl & Mary, his wife Adeline, his son-in-law Andy Schewaga, his parents-in-law James (Dora) Sarchuk; his two brothers John (Jean) Huziak, Andrew Huziek, his three sisters Ann (Steve Lepitzki), Iris Pochipinski, Lena Huziek; brothers-in-law Jerry (Anne) Sarchuk, John (Myrtle) Sarchuk; Orest Sarchuk; sisters-in-law Anne (Mike) Herchak, Jean Stewart, Margaret Sarchuk and Ruth Sarchuk; niece Diane Huziek & nephews Lorne Huziak, Dennis Lepitzki, Ron Stewart, Brian Stewart and Kenneth Scott. There will be a Public Visitation from the Chapel of Kushneryk Funeral Service on Thursday, January 9 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
