Obituary for William Ale Halabura

William Ale Halabura
William died peacefully in his sleep with his family at his side on Wednesday June 17 2015 after a long and hard-fought battle with kidney failure. The youngest of 7 siblings, William was born on August 5, 1925 to Stefan and Maria (nee Mandryk) Halabura on the northwest quarter of Section 2, Township 36 Range 27 west of the Second Meridian some 7 kilometres south of the town of Meacham Saskatchewan. William’s life was shaped by the tragedy of losing his father Stefan on Easter Sunday April 20 1930 thus leaving Maria and the children to struggle as best they could through the Depression years. These times taught William the value of self-reliance and versatility as witnessed by the variety of his careers including farmer, pool room owner, grain elevator agent, drayman in Meacham, assistant cook, janitor and cleaning supervisor at CFS Sagehill Dana SK, landfill watchman, church secretary/treasurer and finally bookkeeper/accountant for his son Stephen’s business. In 1957 he married Mary Komarnicki of Cudworth Saskatchewan. William took over Mary’s parents’ farm and they spent the rest of their lives in Cudworth with his final years first at St. Michael’s Haven in Cudworth then most recently at the Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw Saskatchewan. William was predeceased by his parents Stefan and Maria, his wife Mary, and siblings Carl, Mike, Richard, Josephine, Anne, Helen and infant brother Wasyl. He is survived by his daughter Dianne (Darrell) Schitka and sons Stephen and Gerald, and grandchildren Caitlin and Stacey Schitka and Michael Halabura. He leaves to mourn his closest relatives the Halabura, Yurchuk, Tabashniuk, Kudryk, and Korkoza families and also the Zosiuk, Starosta, Komarnicki, Gutiw, Stefaniuk, and Kosmynka families. William was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Catholic parishes of Holy Transfiguration (Spasa) and Holy Eucharist (Cudworth). His faith was strong and provided him courage and steadfastness in the face of his later health struggles. His other source of strength and comfort were his children and grandchildren who remained a constant joy even into his final moments. William, you will be sorely missed by all of us who were blessed to know you as a man, a father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Vichnaya Pamyat!
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of St. Michael’s Haven in Cudworth and the Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw who provided William with a strong sense of home and community and also great comfort in his final days.
