Obituary for Mabel Joyce "Joy" Moker

Mabel Joyce "Joy" Moker
Joy was born in Virden, Manitoba to William and Mabel Cheavins. On completion of her nursing training in Moose Jaw, Mom moved to Wakaw where she began her nursing career and met the love of her life, Gene. They were married in 1942. Together, Mom and Dad provided their family of four a foundation built on faith, family values, hard work, and a strong sense of community. Indeed, faith and family were so important to Mom, that she converted from the United Church to the Roman Catholic Church. St. Augustine said: “He who sings, prays twice” and Mom was a living example of this. Every Sunday at St. Theresa’s Parish, Mom was either playing the organ or singing in the choir. At home, Mom would often play the piano and sing. In 1967, Mom was instrumental in forming the Centennial Choir to help the community of Wakaw celebrate Canada’s Centennial.
On their retirement, Mom and Dad spent some of the best years of their life together in Mesa, Arizona, golfing, enjoying each other’s company, and being part of the community there.
With Dad’s passing in February, 2006, Mom not only lost the love of her life, but a partner who she grew to depend on. While it was not an easy thing for her to do, Mom moved to Saskatoon in January of 2007 to begin another chapter of her life. On March 3, 2018, we celebrated Mom’s 100th birthday with her. While she was growing tired and spending the last few years of her life without Dad, Mom would always talk about how grateful she was: “I have a lot to be thankful for” she’d say.Mom is lovingly remembered by her children Lloyd (Jane), Lauren and Patrick and their family; Earl (Lynn), Jason, Jeff and their families; Joyanne Code (Jim); and Gord (Val), Naomi and Alex. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years Gene, her brother Elmer, her sister Thelma, and her son-in-law Bob Code.
