Obituary for Andrew Huziek

Andrew Huziek was born at Sniatyn to Wasyl and Mary Huziek on October 14, 1927. He was the second eldest of six children. The family had lost their father Wasyl at an early age, much of the farm business fell upon the children of the family. Andrew, Peter and John did much of the farm work while the sisters, Iris and Anne helped around the yard. As time went on all the siblings went their separate ways to pursue their dreams. Andrew stayed back to work the farm with his brother Pete and mother Mary. On June 17, 1951, Andrew married Olga Dutchak. They have been married for 62 years. They have five children, Andrew and Olga acquired the family farm from his mother Mary in the late 1950's. this is where Andrew and Olga raised their family. As of today, the family farm has been part of the Huziek family for 108 years. Andrew spoke frequently of the many good times and fun that he enjoyed with his childhood friends and his adult friends. He spoke of the many dances that he went to and caroling that was done be horse and sleigh when cars could not travel the winter roads. As Andrew and Olga’s family matured, along came the grandchildren. Andrew’s favorite activity was a game of floor hockey with the grandsons in the kitchen of the old house. He adored his granddaughters and was at their every life event celebration. While Andrew was in good health, he worked hard on the farm. He also drove graders and served on council for the RM of Fish Creek for 25 years. He did his best to provide for his family. When his sons grew older, he enjoyed working with them in the field. The field work would start only after the equipment was serviced and everyone had lunch. Andrew had reasonably good health until the last 10 years when his ability to breathe became more difficult with every passing day. At times it was even difficult to boil a pot of water in the kitchen because the humidity affected his breathing. This condition grew worse to the extent that it resulted in his being hospitalized two times in intensive care for extended periods of time. Upon his doctor’s advice, and after a very difficult decision for his family, it was decided to best suit Andrew’s needs at the Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw. Andrew spoke very fondly of the staff and their professionalism. He often said that it was a good thing that places like this exist. Andrew is a favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed everyone, especially when they came to visit at home or the Lodge. Andrew leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 62 years Olga, his children: Bill (Marilyn) of Edmonton, AB., Morris of Wakaw, SK., Nick (Sharon) of Saskatoon, SK, Zenovia (Terry) Galambos of Tisdale, SK.; His 6 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; his brother Pete of Wakaw, SK.; his mother-in-law Doris Dutchak of Wakaw, SK.; his son-in-law Maurice Maruschak,; his daughter-in-law Brenda Huziek; his brother-in-law Joe Pochipinski,; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
